Mary MacCarty, born circa 1845 in rural Ireland, where she lived a spinster and a wise-woman, one of the last of an ancient royal bloodline until, early in 1919, she was visited by the ban sídhe of the MacCarty family, warning her of the impending execution of her two great-nephews (her only surviving relatives) in the aftermath of the Easter Uprising. With Mary too old to now have children this would mean the extinction of the MacCarty family upon her own death, and the extinction likewise of the ban sídhe. Mortal and fairy came to an arrangement, merging their beings, making both of them effectively immortal and blending their powers and skills.
Mary then left Ireland, disgusted by the behaviour of all sides in the conflicts. In her new home-city she took the name of “Mother Weirdigan”, living on the streets, earning a living by begging/busking and becoming patroness and protector of the other street-people (who have become her “family”), a defender of the underprivileged and a dedicated enemy of all repressive authorities and terrorists alike.
