On the 19th September 1995 a fire consumed the lay-workers cottage at Skomer Vale. The initiates of the order of the many faces of God feared that the Steadman family; Michael, Gwen and their three week old infant son had all perished in the blaze. Then, one of the novices, Sister Kali, heard and found a child nestled in the roots of a nearby oak. He was happily gurgling when she picked him up and she knew at that instant that his name would be Akira. She took him to Brother Thomas, the head of the order and begged that she might keep and raise the child. He took a lot of
convincing but something about the baby’s seemingly miraculous survival spoke of an unusual and significant destiny.
During the years that followed, Akira excelled in every area of study – he proved particularly adept at Ritual and showed what some considered an unhealthy interest in practical magic… When in the daily yoga practice he was discovered to be performing his full lotus some six inches off the Floor. Brother Thomas realised that he might be dealing with a meta-human, albeit one that was only nine years old.
Over the next twelve years Akira consumed every book he could find on religion, philosophy and the mystic arts. Also listened attentively to those like Brother David who taught meditation and Sister Amâpura who taught Yoga. In 1998 the lay-workers cottage was rebuilt and a local couple, Morgan and Angharad Prys had moved the eight miles from Carmarthen to be the new lay workers – this involved performing duties that the initiates could not or would not perform such as trips to the market, the garage, Post Office or the chemist and dealing with sanitary waste.
Being a childless couple, Mr and Ms Prys had a special affection for Akira who they often spoke to in their native Welsh tongue.
Akira learnt to use these powerful ancient words to open portals, move objects and cause others to see, hear and feel those things he that he wills them to think are real. These words were often muttered under his breath or spoken in the stillness of his mind; He could also go into a deep trance or render himself imperceptible.
On his 21st birthday Brother Thomas explained to him that having never been registered with the authorities, who thought him to have perished in the blaze, that Akira might have difficulty with modern bureaucratic niceties.
As a meta-human however he could register with the HCP and learn what the wider world had to offer before deciding whether or not to return to Skomer Vale.
Akira was devastated at leaving Sister Kali and all the other members of his extended family. He was even tearful at having to say goodbye to the sacred bullock Shamu and the friend of every child, the gentle Indian elephant Shakira – however he felt driven by destiny to help others, to use his gifts for the good of all and to discover the truth behind the death of his parents. Knowing he was on the right path but not knowing where it would lead for the first time in his he left Skomer and headed for London.
